ACMA asks for the renewal of the ‘Do not call listing’
The first listings of the 'Do not call register' in Australia, expected to expire within the next few months, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has asked for renewals for the list to avoid any trouble to users.
The first listing was registered in July 2006 and it will expire on May 2010. The do not call listing allows a user to register itself with the telecom companies and get themselves free of unwanted telemarketing calls from various companies.
As per the policy, these listings expire every three years and the users have to re-register themselves. The Australian Communication Consumer Action Network (ACCAN) has stated that this is a faulty process and there should be a permanent listing for the same. Allan Asher, Chief, ACCAN has called it a nonsensical process and contrary to the best practices in the other parts of the world.
However, Chris Chapman, the ACMA Chairperson said that the numbers on the list that aren't renewed after three years will be dropped off the list. Companies who have contacted users who are there on this list have been fined and warned in the past. The telecom player GoTalk has allegedly contacted 40,000 such numbers which are listed on the do not call list. ACMA is taking legal action against GoTalk. Similarly in 2008, Dodo Australia was fined with a heavy sum of $147,400 for calling the numbers on the list.
