A remarkable breakthrough in the field of medicine through a new study which reveals that a simple blood test can lead to modified therapy for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Researcher's claims that patients suffering from RA have certain immune system antibodies which can counter an advance form of treatment.
They have examined 10 patients suffering from RA and found that 8 patients have one of the two antibodies. Yesterday, the trial test conducted on these patients reveals that these patients have the possibility of being cured by the drug rituximab, also known as MabThera. In spite of this finding, it is not recommended to give the dug to the 20pc of patients who test negative.
Professor John Isaacs, from Newcastle University, who led the research, said, this is a revolution in the treatment of this chronic and debilitating condition , indicating the beginning of an innovative period for patients, physicians and the entire RA community. RA is an auto immune disorder which immobilizes the immune system and in this immune system attacks the body's own joints.
Thus through simple blood test, we can analyze in advance which groups are most likely to respond to drugs like rituximab and can prevent irreversible joint damage by starting the treatment early enough.
