Barcelona keen to pick up first trophy of season

Barcelona keen to pick up first trophy of seasonMadrid  - Barcelona are keen to pick up their first trophy of the season on Sunday, at home to Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish Supercup.

Barca came from behind to win the first leg in Bilbao 2-1, with goals from Xavi and Pedro Dominguez. Now they just need to avoid defeat at home to the Basques to clinch the trophy, the traditional curtain-raiser to the Spanish season.

The good news for Barca coach Josep Guardiola is that strikers Lionel Messi and Zlatan Ibrahimovic - both of whom missed the first leg - are now fit.

Ibrahimovic made his long-awaited Barca debut in Wednesday's 1-0 friendly defeat at home to Manchester City, and looked somewhat slow and sluggish.

The bad news for Guardiola is that Andres Iniesta, Thierry Henry, Rafa Marquez, Eric Abidal, Gabriel Milito and Carles Puyol are all carrying injuries.

On Tuesday Guardiola said that "this squad is excellent... but still needs to be strengthened in certain departments."

On Wednesday technical secretary Txiki Begiristain responded by saying that "it is turning out to be impossible to sign the players that we need."

So far, Barca's only summer signings have been Ibrahimovic and left-back Maxwell, both from Inter.

Bilbao will travel to the Camp Nou more in hope than expectation.

Coach Joaquin Caparros said on Wednesday that "we will all have to be at a very high level to achieve anything positive in Barcelona."

Caparros is likely to start with youngsters Oscar de Marcos and Iker Munaian in the Camp Nou, in a bid to rejuventate his attack. (dpa)
