Belapur stadium opens for sport-lovers, finally

The long awaited Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in CBD-Belapur owned by Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) was inaugurated recently. Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik, MLC Manda Mhatre, Mayor Anjani Bhoir, Municipal Commissioner Vijay Nahata and other civic officials were present at the inauguration function. The 3,153 sq meter sport complex comprises of a pavilion building, two lobbies on first floor, player's room, changing room, washrooms and ground. Even if the stadium is ready and inaugurated it won't witness any immediate sports activities.

"The ground condition is not good enough to hold any match. Therefore, before starting sessions on the ground we will lay couple of cricket pitches for net practice and one centre pitch for the match. Similarly, we are planning to construct 200mtr athletic track of six lanes. The ground can also be used for hockey and football as well," stated an NMMC official on condition of anonymity. The civic officials are also in talks with local sports associations and clubs to start the training session in the facility as soon as it is ready. "We are in talks with local sports associations and clubs for utilisation of facility so that they can start there activities here which will give locals an opportunity to learn the sport under proper technical guidance," the official added.

Apart from existing infrastructure, the civic authorities are planning to construct volleyball, kabaddi and kho-kho courts. The construction work of the stadium commenced in 2006 and was scheduled to be completed within year, but was delayed due to material shortage and other technical problems.
