Zambia's opposition condemns reported Chinese biofuels project

Lusaka - Zambia's main opposition leader Michael Sata has strongly opposed a reported request by China to plant 2 million hectares of the jatropha plant in the southern African country for the production of biofuels.
During a discussion programme on local radio Thursday, Sata said such a move would disadvantage Zambians, who are scrambling for land to grow food.
Soni pushes for complete digitalisation of TV

New Delhi, Oct 20 : Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni Tuesday unveiled a plan for complete digitalisation of television in India with a likely approval of a satellite-based cable distribution platform soon.
"There should be a sunset hour for complete digitalization," Soni said at an interactive discussion on 'Government Regulation or Self-Regulation' that was organised by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry here.
Before the year is out, the cabinet is expected to approve HITS (Headend In the Sky), she said.
Researchers discover molecular basis of monarch butterfly migration

Washington, Jan 8: A new study has demystified the annual migration of millions of monarch butterflies from the eastern North American to a cluster of pine groves in central Mexico.
Steven M. Reppert, MD, a University of Massachusetts Medical School Professor and Chair of Neurobiology, has said that the journey is driven by a complex molecular mechanism in a tiny cluster of cells in the butterfly brain.
Reppert’s earlier research had stated that the butterflies use a time-compensated sun compass and daylight cues to help them navigate to the pine groves.

Aussie Police had found “jihadist” materials in Dr Haneef’s flat after arrest

The revelations are contained in the Federal Police''s submission to the Clarke inquiry, which was published on the Internet today, reported news. com. au.
The AFP also revealed that investigators had found a brochure from an organisation the AFP said was "prescribed in a number of countries".

Washington - Rising food and energy prices will be a top priority for the United States at the Group of Eight summit in Japan next week, US President George W Bush said Wednesday.
Bush said he will press the countries to combat HIV/AIDS in Africa, improve global health care, and will urge other leaders to explore ways they can assist in the conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan. The summit will also address global warming, he said.

Officials have said that a Pennsylvania man who pleaded guilty to intentionally vomiting on a father and his two daughters at a baseball game has been sentenced to jail.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reported on Saturday that Matthew Clemmens, 21, was sentenced to 30 to 90 days in jail, two years' probation and 50 hours of community service on charges of simple assault, disorderly conduct and harassment.

London - The wreck of a World War I German submarine buried in the English Channel between Britain and France since 1918 has been moved to deeper waters to prevent it posing a risk to large vessels passing overhead, it was revealed Monday.
The UB38 U-boat which had lain undisturbed off the coast of Dover, southern Britain, was moved earlier this month because of growing concern over the increasingly deep draught of modern vessels navigating the English Channel, one of the world's busiest waterways.

Muslim rebels, government troops clash in Philippines, two wounded

Colonel Marlou Salazar said the fighting erupted late Thursday when Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels attacked an army outpost in Guindulungan town in Maguindanao province, 960 kilometres south of Manila.
"Our men there defended our position," he said. "The rebels withdrew but their blocking force along the national highway strafed a cargo truck loaded with fish, wounding two civilians."
Eid Kabalu, MILF civil military affairs chief, denied that their forces initiated the fighting, describing the incident as a "mis-encounter."

Baghdad (Iraq), Sep 1 : Amnesty International on Tuesday said that even though Iraq has been free from Saddam Hussein''''s regime for six years, more than 1,000 prisoners are still facing death penalty in the country.
It said that Iraq's burdened justice system can barely cope with ordinary crimes, and punishment for crimes ranging from murder to the membership and support of armed groups are out of bounds for them.
Soon, human sewage to power thousands of homes

According to a report in The Telegraph, the 4.3 million pounds scheme will see enough methane gas from human waste to provide fuel for heating and cooking for up to 5,000 homes by 2011.
The project is the first of its kind in Britain and the biomethane is being hailed as a "fuel for the future" because of its green credentials.
It will be run from Manchester's Davyhulme waste water treatment works, which is Britain's second biggest sewage works, and the gas will be supplied through the local pipeline network.
