In the first visit ever by a German head of state to the violence- plagued country, Merkel supported Uribe in his efforts to buttress the authority of the state over the broiling conflicts that have put many sections of the country in a state of civil war.
After meeting with Uribe, Merkel said that consequential pursuit of the crimes of the past by the paramilitary troops was essential to re-establishing the trust of the people in the state.

Gandhinagar, Jan 8 : The Gujarat government has granted tax exemption to the Amitabh Bachchan starrer "Paa", that deals with a rare medical disorder, progeria or accelerated ageing.
A notification granting the tax exemption was issued by the Gujarat government Friday. The tax exemption in the entire state would come into effect from Saturday.
The plea for the tax exemption was made by Bachchan himself during his visit to the state capital Wednesday, when he met Chief Minister Narendra Modi and arranged a special showing of the film for Modi.

London - A second-half goal from Carlos Villanueva helped Blackburn Rovers reach the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 win Monday at non-league Blyth Spartans.
The Chilean midfielder curled in a free kick 13 minutes into the second half to seal Blackburn's place in the last 32 of the competition.
Rovers will now play at Sunderland in the fourth round.
"It was very comfortable until the last five to 10 minutes, but having not converted our chances they were bound to get a chance at some stage," Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce said.

It was previously believed that canines are devoid of "sense of self" needed to experience so-called secondary emotions such as jealousy, embarrassment, empathy or guilt, however, a new study has shown that dogs are prone to such complex emotions.
Dr Friederike Range, of the University of Vienna''s neurobiology department, has shown that dogs feel intense jealously when they spot that they are unfairly treated compared with other dogs.
"Dogs show a strong aversion to inequity," the Telegraph quoted her as saying.

India's Leander Paes and Cara Black of Zimbabwe have stormed into the final of the mixed doubles event of the US open for the second successive time after defeating Taipei-Zimbabwe pair of Su-Wei Hsieh and Kevin Ullyett in the semifinal at the Flushing Meadows on Tuesday.

Washington, Jan 23 : A team of researchers at Brown University has identified a cellular mechanism that could someday help fight the aging process.
The discovery by Stephen Helfand and Nicola Neretti as well as their colleagues adds another piece to the puzzle that Helfand, a professor of biology, molecular biology, cell biology and biochemistry, first discovered in 2000.
That year, he identified a mutation in the Indy gene that can extend the life span of fruit flies.

Berlin - Germany hopes for a solution to the border dispute between Slovenia and Croatia, to enable Croatia to join NATO and the European Union (EU), German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Friday.
After a meeting in Berlin with his Slovenian counterpart Samuel Zbogar, Steinmeier referred to the offers made by EU Commissioner Olli Rehn and former Finnish president Martti Ahtisaari to mediate in the dispute over a bay on the Adriatic coast.
Slovenia and Croatioa should approach each other with a constructive and flexible mindset, Steinmeier said.
