More than 5,000 cabbies on strike in north-west China
Submitted by Mohit Joshi on Sun, 06/14/2009 - 19:11.Beijing - More than 5,000 taxi drivers in China's northwest went on strike for the second day to protest a reported government regulation that would shorten operating licences, local media reported Sunday.
The strike in Xining, the capital of Qinghai province, began Saturday night after a local newspaper reported that the provincial government had issued a regulation to shorten cab drivers' operation rights to 8 years from the current 12 years, the state-run China Daily reported.
According to the report, operating licences would be taken back by the taxi company after 8 years and redistributed.

Washington, June 2 : The United States and Pakistan jointly flew 12 drone missions over the tribal areas in March until Islamabad abandoned the mission, the Washington Post claims.
Paying heed to Pakistan continuous demand of a joint drone missions into the tribal areas, US forces offered a compromise in early spring.
They said that Pakistan could direct US military Predators over areas of its choice, transmitting images directly into its own intelligence channels.

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York is all set to exhibit a half computer, half robot called ‘Wizkid’ that behaves talks to the user just like a little child.
Created by Swiss researchers, ‘Wizkid’ will be part of the museum’s Design and the Elastic Mind exhibit, running from February 24 to May 12, 2008.
Its makers insist that just like any kid, their robot can amuse people, ask them lots of questions, and even bother them.

Jammu, Nov 17 : The Indian Army's Northern Command hospital at Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir has successfully performed bone marrow transplant in a cancer patient, becoming the first institution in the state to offer this specialised treatment, officials said Tuesday.
The process was performed on a 50-year-old serving soldier, suffering from multiple myeloma (a cancer of the white blood cells), Northern Command spokesman Maj. S. K. Rathi said.

Geneva - A draft resolution praising the government of Sri Lanka was submitted to the United Nations Friday ahead of next week's special Human Rights Council session on the Asian country and its recently ended armed conflict with the Tamil Tiger rebels.
The draft text was tabled by Sri Lanka itself, with the backing of 12 members of the council, including China, India, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
