G20 has tentative deal to shift IMF votes to developing countries

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania - Leaders of the Group of 20 (G20) nations reached a tentative deal Friday to give developing countries a greater voice in global financial institutions.
After a two-day summit in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the G20 said it had agreed to give developing countries an increase in voting shares of at least 5 per cent in the International Monetary Fund. That would bring them close to a 50-per-cent share of votes in the organization.
The measure will be put in place by 2011.

Portugal preparing to recognize Kosovo: reports

Foreign Minister Luis Amado may disclose the date of recognition on Tuesday, when he will inform a parliamentary foreign affairs commission about Portugal's stance, the daily Publico said.
Amado is currently holding meetings with the parliamentary parties to discuss the issue.
Portugal wanted align itself with most other European Union countries, which have backed the February 17 independence declaration of the former Serbian province, the daily said.

Tokyo - Tokyo stocks opened higher Tuesday with the benchmark Nikkei index surging 3.74 per cent, or 320.63 points, to 8,897.61 in the first 15 minutes of trading.
The broader Topix index of all first-section issues rose 36.16 points, or 4.17 per cent, to 903.28.
On currency markets at 9 am (0000 GMT), the dollar traded at 98.96-99.01 yen, down from 99.08-18 yen at 5 pm Monday in New York. The Tokyo market was closed Monday for a national holiday.

Submitted by Sahil Nagpal on Tue, 04/08/2008 - 12:00.Islamabad, Apr. 8: The Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) of Pakistan has left dozens of Kashmiri refugee families without a place to live in the country.
According to official records of the ETPB, 1,081 Kashmiri families were allotted property in different districts of the country in 1959 under Scheme 7. Some families were allotted land in "Hindu gaddis"- the land adjacent and dedicated to temples – on temporary basis.
As a result of long litigations, a law was enacted in 1975, allowing permanent ownership of property to Kashmiri families after submission of proscribed fees with the national exchequer in 1977-78.
Britain's Nimrod surveillance aircraft "not airworthy" says ruling
Submitted by Sahil Nagpal on Fri, 05/23/2008 - 23:02.London - Britain's ageing fleet of Nimrod reconnaissance aircraft should be grounded because the planes have "never been airworthy," an inquest into a Nimrod crash in Afghanistan which killed 14 servicemen in 2006 ruled Friday.
"The entire Nimrod fleet has never been airworthy from the first time it was released to service nearly 40 years ago," judge Andrew Walker said at the end of the inquest at Oxford Coroner's Court.
His ruling, which is not binding on the government, brought an immediate response from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) which said that the 13-strong Nimrod fleet of Britain's Royal Air Force (RAF) was "safe."
