Beijing - Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva arrived in Beijing Monday for talks with Chinese leaders, saying ahead of his three-day visit that he planned to deepen his nation's strategic partnership with China.
Lula was scheduled to meet Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao Tuesday, China's Foreign Affairs Ministry said.
Before his arrival, Lula told the Chinese government's official Xinhua news agency that he saw three key elements in the strategic partnership: trade, scientific cooperation and coordination in international affairs.
The China-Brazil strategic partnership could broaden both nations' cooperation with other developing countries and "may even lead to a new global economic, scientific and trade landscape in the 21st century," the agency quoted him as saying.
Chinese Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said Lula and Hu would hold "an extensive and in-depth exchange of views on deepening the bilateral strategic partnership, expanding pragmatic cooperation in various fields as well as regional and international issues of common interest."
The agency said the impact of swine flu on global tourism and the sustainable development of the tourism industry were among other topics for discussion.
Lula was also scheduled to attend the inauguration of a Centre for Brazilian Studies at Beijing's Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and visit a joint satellite project during his visit.
"Brazil-China cooperation is of strategic importance for both sides," he told Xinhua last week at a global tourism summit.
China is Brazil's largest trading partner, but Lula said he still saw potential for a huge expansion in bilateral trade, which jumped to 36.44 billion dollars last year.
Earlier this year, Brazil's state-owned oil and gas giant Petrobras signed an agreement to supply up to 100,000 barrels of oil per day to China and secured a 10-billion-dollar loan for oil exploration from the China Development Bank. (dpa)
