Chandigarh to spend Rs.4.7 cr on educational institutesChandigarh, Dec 15 - The administration of this union territory (UT) will spend Rs. 4.65 crore (Rs. 46.5 million) on the maintenance and construction of government schools and colleges, a senior official said here Tuesday.

"Out of the sanctioned amount, Rs. 1.1 crore will be earmarked for schools, Rs. 1.9 crore for colleges, and Rs. 30 lakh for providing scholarships," said UT home-cum-education secretary Ram Niwas.

"Additionally, Rs. 3.3 crore will be spent on development of primary and secondary schools and sufficient funds will be provided for strengthening vocational training courses in schools."

Currently, there are over 100 schools and six colleges under the Chandigarh administration.

The UT's higher education department will also start computer multimedia courses at all institutions and spruce up libraries by installing computer systems.

The decisions were taken Monday, Niwas said.

It was also decided that the UT education department would give a grant of Rs. 1.4 crore as financial assistance to six non-government primary schools in this city. (IANS)
