Beijing  - Protests outside Chinese embassies and consulates as well as last week's ethnic-related riots in China's far western region of Xinjiang were "well-orchestrated," state media charged Monday.

Consulates and embassies in cities including Munich, Oslo, Los Angeles and Ankara suffered "violent attacks" by "supporters of the East Turkestan separatists" soon after the riots began July 5, the state-run China Daily newspaper said.

Riots and clashes between ethnic Uighur and Han citizens in Urumqi, the capital of the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region, left 184 people dead, according to the government.

The government maintained that the bloodshed was organized by foreign separatist forces, while the Uighur ethnic minority have long complained of discrimination by the central government.

"The attacks against China's diplomatic missions and the Urumqi riots seemed to be well-organized," the China Daily said, adding that almost all the participants declared their affiliation with either the World Uighur Congress, headed by exiled Uighur businesswoman Rebiya Kadeer, or its subordinate groups.

The report said protestors in Munich gathered Tuesday with the intention of attacking the consulate and only after their plan was foiled by police did they reassemble in a square where they harassed passing Chinese tourists.

Much of the government blame for the riots has been put on Kadeer, whom officials accused of instigating the unrest by encouraging mass protests using the internet, telephones and mobile phones. She dismissed the accusations.

Uighur exile groups have claimed that up to 800 people died in the violence, many of them Uighurs shot or beaten to death by police during rioting July 5-6. (dpa)
