China's two pandas reject Taiwan bamboo, lose 3 kg

China's two pandas reject Taiwan bamboo, lose 3 kg Taipei  - The two giant pandas given by China to Taiwan are turning up their nose at Taiwanese bamboo and have each lost 3 kilogrammes, a newspaper reported Saturday.

Tuan Tuan, the male, weighed 109 kg while Yuan Yuan, the female, weighed 111.2 kg when they were put on the scales at the Taipei Zoo on Friday, the Liberty Times said.

The two four-year-olds are still living on a mixture of Chinese and Taiwanese bamboos, but they prefer the Chinese bamboo and eat very little Taiwan bamboo.

The Taipei Zoo will be offering other types of Taiwan bamboo to the pair to find out which type they like.

When China sent the two pandas to Taiwan on Tuesday, they sent along 300 kilograms of Chinese bamboo, or a week's supply. Now the Chinese bamboo is running out.

Besides bamboo, the Taipei Zoo is feeding the two pandas bamboo shoots, carrots, apples and steamed buns made with bamboo powder, corn, soybean, sugar, salt and calcium.

The two pandas love steamed buns, apples and carrots very much, the Taipei Zoo said.

The Taipei Zoo, aware of the close public following of the pandas' welfare, has been holding daily press conferences about Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan. (dpa)
