GM and UAW reach Tentative Agreement

As their contract was about to terminate, the United Automobile Workers union (UAW) and General Motors (GM) on Sunday night announced a tentative agreement on a latest national agreement that covered around 52,000 employees.

Dennis Williams, the union president, mentioned in a statement, “We believe that this agreement will present stable long-term significant wage gains and job security commitments to UA members now and in the future”.

The details weren’t disclosed yet, and the union said that the tentative agreement continued to have the wage progression formulation forged in the last week agreement with Fiat Chrysler.

A field trial was carried out to know whether or not genetically-modified wheat can repel aphid pests. But the controversial trial has failed to prove that the GM crop can stop the pests, as it was claimed by scientists in earlier laboratory studies.

Scientists have modified the GM wheat with an extra synthetic gene for an insect pheromone used by aphids as an alarm signal.

For now, it is not known as to why GM crop did not work as was expected by researchers. Scientists have affirmed that there are chances that aphids might have become adjusted to the constant alarm signal.

Detroit headquartered General Motors Company announced on Friday that it has built a new Teen Driver system that automatically mutes the radio when passenger sitting on the front seat is not buckled up. The new system also gives a report card to parents about their teens' trip. According to the company, the new system will be in on its redesigned 2016 Chevrolet Malibu.

While giving information about the new system, the company said that the Teen Driver system also gives audible and visual warning to the driver if vehicle travels over pre-set speeds by parents. Volume of the radio could also be set to a lower level that cannot be exceeded, as per the company.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had passed a special order last month, asking GM to answer 107 questions as well as furnish reams of documents by April 3 to support the ongoing investigation into the ignition-switch problem in GM cars.  But the auto giant failed to answer many of those questions.

The SUVs which are being recalled include the 2006-2007 models of five of GM's mid-sized SUV brands: Chevrolet TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy, Buick Rainier, Isuzu Ascender and Saab 97-X.

GM to increase product prices in India

GM to increase product prices in IndiaGeneral Motors India has announced that it will increase the prices of its models in India to compensate for the weakening value of the rupee.

The company said that it will increase the price by about 1-2 percentby January next year. It has already increased the price of Beat diesel car by Rs 15,000 with immediate effect.

"In case of Beat diesel, we had an introductory price. Due to the current currency fluctuations and rising commodity prices, we have no option but pass it on to consumers," said, P Balendran, the Vice President of GM India.
