Crackdown on Retailers Selling E-cigarettes without Child-Resistant Packaging

On Tuesday, New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman has announced a crackdown on retailers who have sold liquid nicotine used in e-cigarettes without child-resistant packaging. He has named four companies that violated the state’s rule that requires childproof containers.

The announcement of crackdown has come a year after the state introduced a law that requires retailers of liquid nicotine to save the substance in a better manner. An incident has taken place in which 18-month-old boy in New York last year died due to the substance.

In fact, poison control centers have attended hundreds of calls in which children have come in contact with the liquid that can cause serious illness or even death if its swallowed or gets absorbed through skin.

Liquid nicotine is taken from tobacco and mixed with flavors, colors and chemicals. Experts have raised concerns that the products that sometimes packed like candy can prove attractive to children. Last year, the Food and Drug Administration has proposed regulation for e-cigarettes.

“Today, we are taking action against four companies, and putting others on notice: Stop selling liquid nicotine in anything but child-resistant containers, or we will come after you”, said Mr. Schneiderman.

He along with 29 other attorney generals have asked the FDA to stop companies from marketing and selling e-cigarettes to minors and to ban flavored e-cigarettes. Many manufacturers have said that they have started using child-resistant packaging.
