Declare Ambani MoU null and void: Government to SC

Mukesh Ambani and Anil AmbaniThe government of India, through a special leave petition filed in the Supreme Court, has urged the apex court to scrap the private Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) of Ambani family as it does not conform with the Gas Utilization Policy.

Both Mukesh and Anil Ambani are fighting battle since 2006 over gas from the Krishna-Godavari basin.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has filed special leave petition against Mukesh Ambani and Anil Ambani personally besides Reliance Industries (RIL) and Reliance Natural Resources (RNRL). Government said that the natural gas belongs to the state and it is a national asset. Ambani family is unnecessarily fighting over pricing and contract issue.

The filing maintains that it is the duty of government to decide the priority sector to which gas should be given. Thus, the MoU interferes with the sovereign right of the government and must be declared null and void.

It should be recalled that the MoU was upheld by the Bombay High Court and the Supreme Court will take the matter on July 20 following RIL's filing in the court.

The government has taken clear and decisive stand over the matter and it is expected to resolve the legal battle between Ambani brothers very soon.
