Diabetic Patients can increase in Kirklees, if action is not taken: PHE Review

More than one in 10 people in Kirklees are having risk of suffering from type-2-diabetes. The finding is from a nationwide review by Public Health England (PHE), which was conducted to curb the increasing levels of the disease.

As per the survey, around 11.5% of adults in Kirklees are at risk of developing the disease. Currently, there are 21,921 adults living with the disease in Kirklees. But as per authorities concerned, the number can increase alarmingly if no action is taken.

Barbara Young, Chief Executive of Diabetes UK, was of the view, "Having high blood glucose levels significantly increases your risk of developing type 2 diabetes, which is a serious health condition which affects 2.9 million people in England, and can lead to devastating complications such as blindness, amputations and stroke, and ultimately early death".

Diabetes UK said that type-2-diabetes can cause a lot of serious health problems like blindness, amputation and stroke and in severe cases, death. Dr Andrew Lee, diabetes lead at PHE Yorkshire and the Humber, said that the best ways to reduce the risk of developing type-2-diabetes is to lose weight, regular exercise and eat healthy.

A Kirklees Council spokesperson affirmed that they would be working with the NHS to raise awareness on how the disease can be prevented. Major factors that increase risk of the disease are being overweight or obese and sedentary lifestyle.
