Diplomatic blunder strains Macedonia's ruling coalition

Diplomatic blunder strains Macedonia's ruling coalition Skopje - Macedonia's ruling coalition was plunged into a crisis Thursday after a diplomatic blunder in its relations with neighbouring Kosovo, local media said reported.

The Kosovo President Fatmir Sejdiu cancelled a trip to Macedonia scheduled for Thursday reportedly when Skopje downgraded his visit from "official" to "working."

Sejdiu is a leader of the largely ethnic-Albanian Kosovo, which declared unilateral independence from Serbia 15 months ago.

Sejdiu had already been snubbed once by Macedonia, two weeks ago when he was not invited on the new Macedonian President Georgi Ivanov's inauguration.

The cancellation of Thursday's trip has spurred the ethnic Albanian Democratic Union for Integrations (DUI) party to consider a pullout from the ruling coalition in protest at an "unacceptable and huge diplomatic scandal in relations with the newly independent Kosovo," party sources said.

Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski's conservative VMRO-DPMNE won an absolute majority in polls a year ago, but a collapse of the alliance with his ethnic Albanian partners could be undermine stability in the fragile government.(dpa)
