Discovery of Bio Ceramic prosthesis have cut down the cost by 70%

broken-kneeThe Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute (CGCRI) have discovered a Bio-Ceramic prosthesis for the hip and knees which has cut down the cost by 70%. Patients who were largely dependent on imported implants can now replace their broken knee or hip with this new method of prosthesis.

This study was led by a Debabrata Basu, a scientist and head of the bio-ceramic and coating division of CGCRI. He is working to develop an artificial implant from last five years with 5 more team members. He said that Indian make prosthesis has a life span of not more than 7 to 14 years whereas the bio ceramic prosthesis has a minimum life span of 20 years.

This major discovery will be implemented on May 23 and May 24 by a team of doctors at Jubilant Kalpataru Hospital in Barasat for a joint replacement operation. Scientists are crossing their fingers for the success of this project; once it is found to be successful the patents will be sold to a manufacturer. CGCRI director Indranil Manna said that bio ceramic prosthesis will cost only Rs 15,000 per stick where as an imported prosthesis costs around Rs 125000.

Kausik Sarkar, an orthopedic surgeon from Jubilant Kalpataru Hospital recommend patients to go for bio ceramic prosthesis because the overall cost associated with the surgery is less and it is a better option than existing one since it has bigger life span.
