Divorcees at Increased risk of facing Heart Attacks

According to a new research, there is a possibility that divorcees have more heart attacks as compared to their peers who stay married.

For the study, about 15,827 people have been analyzed by researchers. According to the researchers, it has been found that women were worst affected and there was a decline in the risk if they married again. The study that published in the journal Circulation said that chronic stress, associated to divorce, and also had a long-term impact on the body.

The British Heart Foundation asked for more research before it is classed as a major heart risk. According to the researchers, it is already known that the death of a close loved one can really increase the risk of a heart attack.

Team of researchers at Duke University has shown a similar effect after divorce. The study was conducted between 1992 and 2010. During course of the study, about one in three people divorced at least once.

The researchers said that women who divorced once had higher risk of facing heart attack. These women were 24% more likely to have had heart attack as compared to women who were continuously married. The women who divorced multiple times were 77% more likely to suffer a heart attack.

According to the researchers, in men, there was a modest 10% extra risk for one divorce and also 30% increase after many divorces. When it’s about remarriage, the risk was slightly decreased for women and for men bounced back.

“This risk is comparable to that of high blood pressure or if you have diabetes, so it's right up there, it is pretty big”, said one of the researchers Prof Linda George.
