Elephant death toll rises in Africa as birth rate goes down: Study

African-Elephant-Death-Toll-RisesLondon, Aug 19 : A new study has raised an alarm by revealing that more elephants in Africa are being killed than are being born in a year.

Researchers said in a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that almost 35,000 elephants have been killed since 2010 in the African continent, reported the BBC. They also warned that if the killing continues at this rate, the entire population will be wiped out in the next 100 years.

A kilogram of ivory is worth thousands of dollars and with the rapidly growing market in Asia, the demand for elephant tusks are soaring in recent years, the report added. (ANI)
