Facebook’s Fat Emoticon Gets a Thumbs Down

Facebook’s latest "feeling fat" emoticon has received bad remarks from the public and an appeal has been made on Change.org to push the company to remove the emoticon. The emoticon is basically a huge smiling face with fatter or chubbier cheeks.

While for some it is just an emoticon but for many men and women, it had only worsened the stigma that the fat people face every day.

A movement named ‘Endangered Bodies’ that intends to improve a person's self-image, has started a new campaign against this emoticon. The campaign launched in one of their Facebook posts is named FatIsNotAFeeling, as for a lot of people, including them, fat is not a feeling but a very real presence in our society.

It was launched to avoid further worsening of the challenges that the fat people face, including discrimination at work, less wages, and even mistreatment and disrespect by their own physicians.
The campaign highlighted that by allowing people to say they're feeling fat in their statuses, it only gives the impression that being fat is bad.

Some of the members commented that this emoticon will pave the way for making fun of the people who think they're fat, including those who fight eating disorders.

Most of the people who develop anorexia or bulimia have a wrong view about their body size. They think that they are overweight even if they're not, and follow a very restricted diet that leaves them severely malnourished.

The campaign has finally reached Change.org with a petition that has gained more than 12,000 supporters in just 14 days. The campaign has also published by popular websites and media such as Bustle and Cosmopolitan UK.

A Facebook spokesperson said, "People use Facebook to share their feelings with friends and support each other". He added that the emoticons are there to help people to express themselves to friends and family in a better way.
