FIR registered against Ashis Nandy under SC/ST Act

Ashis-Nandy1Jaipur, Jan 26 : A case has been registered against eminent political critic and sociologist Ashis Nandy, over his controversial `caste remark', under SC/ST Atrocity Act in Jaipur on Saturday.

Earlier in the day, Nandy stirred a major controversy by alleging the people belonging to OBC (Other Backward Class), Scheduled Caste (SC) and ST (Scheduled Tribe) for corruption during a discussion at the Jaipur Literature Festival here.

"A FIR (First Information Report) has been registered by the Rajasthan SC/ST Manch against Ashis Nandy under section 506 (I) of the SC/ST Atrocity Act," said Janesh Singh, SHO of the police station, where the case was registered.

During the discussion, Nandy said: "Most of the corrupt come from the OBC, SC and ST communities and as long as it remains, Indian republic will survive."

Nandy's remarks soon invited strong condemnation from the political parties and Dalit writer and thinkers.

Slamming Nandy for his statement, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati asked for an immediate apology.

"Ashis Nandy should be sent to jail after lodging a case against him under SC/ST Act," said Mayawati at a press conference in New Delhi.

P. L. Punia, Chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Caste, also condemned Nandy and said that legal action should be taken against people like him, who dividing the nation.

However, Nandy clarified his remark alter in the day and said that what he meant was that most of the people getting caught in corruption charges belongs to marginalized sections, as they don''t have the means to save themselves unlike people from upper castes. (ANI)
