Fuel deregulation – a hurdle for diesel models

Auto-SectorAfter the government has showed its intentions of deregulating the prices of diesel in the Indian market several car makers are anxiously watching the government's move as a large chunk of the future strategy of the company will depend on the decision of the government. Experts are of a view that the price differential among the two i.e. petrol and diesel will decide how will the auto majors would like to launch their diesel models in the Indian market.

Be it the relatively small players like Mitsubishi, Toyota Kirloskar, Ford India or giants like Maruti Suzuki, all of them are currently reviewing their plans in order to firm their future strategy for the diesel models.

Keeping in mind the fact that diesel is cheaper than petrol by a minimum of 28 per cent, going up to 40 per cent in the four major metros, the deregulation of the fuel may take its price very close to petrol and hence losing out on the price advantage of the fuel.

Sandeep Singh, deputy managing director (sales and marketing), Toyota Kirloskar, said, that the plans of the company to launch the diesel variant of its upcoming hatchback and entry-level sedan model, Etios will largely depend on the move of the government o deregulate the prices of diesel.
