Youngsters jockey to be on air

A career as a radio jockey has emerged as an important option for youngsters. "Our survey showed that radio jockeying and production is the most sought after career option among youngsters. With a 15-18% growth in the industry there's a dearth of quality professionals," said Apurva Purohit, CEO of Radio City.

To fill the dearth, Radio City School of Broadcasting (RCSB) is offering a six month certificate course in radio jockeying and radio production.

'No compromise on computer education'

What is the effect of slowdown on IT education?
The global slowdown has affected the IT industry but IT training has not taken a backseat. "Parents will cut down on luxuries but not compromise on their child's education. It is their top priority," said Bhavika Chouhan, vice president of Maya Academy of Cinematics.

Students learn and enjoy at Quasar '09

Over 150 teams from various institutes are participating in Quasar, an inter-collegiate art and design festival organised by MIT Institute of Design which started on Sunday.

VIT, COEP win Firodiya Karandak

Vishwakarma Institute of Technology (VIT) and College of Engineering Pune (COEP) stood first and second respectively at the Firodiya Karandak which concluded on Monday at the Yashwantrao Chavan auditorium. ILS stood third.

The 35-year old inter-collegiate fest saw participation by 35 colleges from the city which began on February 9. Firodiya Karandak started when college gatherings were banned in Pune as a variety show competition.

It has rocked Pune campus since 1974.

Edvance Group's first preschool opened

In a bid to offer quality education, Edvance Group launched Vivero International, its first preschool in the city, at Kalyaninagar on Sunday. Narendra Jadhav, vice-chancellor, University of Pune (UoP), inaugurated the preschool.

Speaking on the occasion, Jadhav commended the initiative. "The preschool is an important project in the city as it will help in reducing the gap between education and society," he said.

Inmate dies in jail, family blames officials

One of the convicts in the 1993 Surat bomb blast case died at Vadodara jail late on Sunday night. Family members of 40-year-old Eshaan Patel have alleged that negligence on the part of jail authorities led to his death, and they are planning to take legal action against the authorities.

Patel died after suffering a heart attack at Vadodara central prison on Sunday night. Patel was a resident of Dayadra village in Bharuch.

Patel and six others were convicted in the Surat railway station blast case of April 22, 1993 that had left 37 people injured. They were sentenced to 20 years in jail in October 2008.
