GM to begin negotiations with CAW in March

GM to begin negotiations with CAW in MarchUS based auto major, General Motors is set to begin negotiations with the representatives of the Canadian Auto Workers in March on a new collective agreement.

Mike Van Boekel, chairperson of CAW Local 88 said that the fact that the company has asked for the negotiations to begin seven months earlier indicates that the company is set to keep the production of Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain in Canada.

"There are plans for an addition to the plant, and I think GM would like to get its fixed costs in place before they start pouring cement. Hopefully, this will lead to long-term job security," he said.

CAW president Ken Lewenza has said that the representatives are ready to begin early negotiations on the agreement if the agreement includes aspects of future investments on the plant and production allocation. He noted that the additional investment has been planned for the plant for adding additional floor space.

He expressed that the management f the company as well as the union representatives would like to achieve labour peace during the coming three to four year period at the company.
