Government in Maharashtra in 48 hours, says Congress

Ashok ChavanMaharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan on Wednesday said the new government will be formed in 48 hours.

Talking to the reporters, Chavan said the two parties would soon finalise the power sharing formula and the government is likely to be formed in 48 hours.

His statement comes a day after Maharashtra Governor Jamir summoned Chavan (Congress leader) and Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal (who represents NCP) and told them to formed the government within a couple of days. He also told that he would have to consider other options (such as imposing President's rule) in case they failed to form the government.

Following it, activities gained momentum in the Congress-NCP camp though both the parties were locked in a bitter tussle over larger pie in power after they won 144 of the 288 assembly seats in October 13. Negotiators from both the parties are expected to finalise the power sharing formula by tonight.

Meanwhile, Jamir told a delegation of opposition Shiv Sena-BJP alliance that he had reminded Chavan and Bhujbal that since the electorate of Maharashtra had given them a fresh mandate, it was their responsibility to respect the mandate and form a government without any further delay.
