Washington - Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, already ruling over 100 million dollars from its midweek global debut day, swept in another 79 million dollars in the US weekend box office.
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs was left in the freezer with 17 million dollars, followed by Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (13.8 million dollars); Bruno Uni (8.3 million dollars); The Proposal (8.3 million dollars); Public Enemies (7.6 million dollars); the fanciful Pixar film UP, with 3.1 million dollars; My Sister's Keeper (2.8 million dollars); and I Love You Beth Cooper (2.67 million dollars).
On its debut on Wednesday, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the latest movie about the boy wizard, earned 104 million dollars - 58.18 million dollars in North America and 45.85 million internationally - distributor Warner Bros said.
The US opening day take was the second largest ever for a midweek debut, trailing last month's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen with 62 million dollars.
The debut day tally for the sixth film in the Harry Potter series broke a record for the 4.5-billion-dollar franchise. The previous movie, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, had first-day US receipts of 44.2 million dollars and went on to gross 937 million dollars worldwide. (dpa)
