London, June 9 : The swine flu outbreak during the winter of 2009-2010 was much more widespread than previously realised, a study says.

Blood samples taken from Scottish adults in March last year at the end of the H1N1 flu season showed that almost half were carrying antibodies to the virus. Antibodies are either produced by the body or injected through vaccines when the body is exposed to pathogens.

London, Jan 3 : Seriously ill babies and children are being forced to travel to different places across Britain as intensive care beds have been allotted to swine flu patients.

Only 15 of the country's 320 intensive care beds for infants are said to have been made free, according to the Daily Express.

There have been reports that seriously ill children have been moved up to 100 miles (160 km) in ambulances from the West Midlands to Merseyside and London.

New Delhi, Dec 24 : Only one swine flu case was reported in India during the last week, the health ministry said Friday.

According to the health ministry's data, only one case of swine flu was reported in Tamil Nadu between Dec 13 and Dec 19.

New Delhi, Nov 2 : The number of swine flu cases in the country dipped marginally last week but the number saw a little rise in those states which were so far less affected by the H1N1 virus, officials said.

London, Oct 18 - There may be a possible link between the swine flu jab and an increased risk of developing a rare nerve disease, admit health watchdogs.

Experts are carrying out studies to examine a possible link between the vaccine and Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), which attacks the nervous system and can cause paralysis and even death.

Panaji, Oct 13 : For the Karnataka government, mining ranks second only to last year's swine flu scare as far as a bad press is concerned, according to a top tourism ministry official.

Addressing a press conference as part of the Karnataka Tourism Roadshow here Wednesday, Principal Secretary (Tourism) K. Jothiramalingam said the tourists who come to Karnataka were not at all bothered about mining.

New Delhi, Oct 5 : With the monsoon withdrawing, the number of swine flu cases in the country has seen a sharp drop - to almost half the previous, an official spokesperson said here Tuesday.

A total of 337 cases were reported from all parts of the country during the week ended Oct 2 as against 616 recorded during the previous week.

New Delhi, Sep 4 : Two people died of swine flu in Delhi Saturday, an official said. The deaths take the toll in the capital to 33 this year.

"One was a Delhi resident and was admitted in Apollo hospital while the other one was from Uttar Pradesh and admitted in Safdarjung hospital," Debashish Bhattacharya, nodal officer for swine flu, told IANS.

Of the fatalities, 20 were from Delhi and 13 from outside the city, Bhattacharya added.

New Delhi, Aug 24 : Two people succumbed to swine flu in the capital, taking the toll due to the virus here to 23 this season while 37 new cases were reported, an official said Tuesday.

"One patient died at Ram Manohar Lohia hospital, while the other succumbed at Lady Hardinge Medical College in the last 24 hours. Also, 37 new cases of swine flu were reported," Delhi's nodal officer for swine flu, Debashish Bhattacharya told IANS.

Panaji, Aug 13 : With one swine flu death and 30 H1N1 cases reported in Goa this year, the state government has now started cautioning tourists coming to Goa about the disease.

State Chief Secretary Sanjiv Srivastava, in a written order Friday, asked the state tourism department to publish a handout on swine flu related Dos and Don'ts which will be made available to all tourists checking into hotels in Goa, which is known for its beach-oriented tourism.

Amritsar, Aug 9 : A middle-aged woman died of swine flu in Punjab, authorities said Monday.

This was the first case of swine flu in Amritsar in 2010.

"The deceased was identified as Malti Devi, 48. She was suffering from running nose, sore throat and headache and had come to us last week for treatment. Earlier she was going to some private hospital," said Hardeep Singh Ghai, district nodal officer for swine flu, here Monday evening.

New Delhi, Aug 6 : As many as 21 people tested positive for swine flu Friday, taking the number of people infected by the Influenza A (H1N1) virus to 155, an official said.

"Twenty one people tested positive for swine flu but there have been no deaths today," Debashish Bhattacharya, nodal officer for swine flu, told IANS.

Bhubaneswar, Aug 5 : The swine flu toll in Orissa rose to four Thursday with the death of a 27-year-old man, officials said.

The man was tested positive for swine flu Wednesday. He died Thursday at Sriram Chandra Bhanj Medical College & Hospital at Cuttack, 26 km from here, a senior state health official told IANS.

Kolkata, Aug 4 : Five more people tested positive for swine flu in West Bengal Wednesday taking the number of confirmed cases of the contagious disease to 109 in the state this year, the health department said.

"Five confirmed cases of swine flu were reported today (Wednesday). The total confirmed cases of H1N1 infection is now 109 in the state," the department said in a release.

Washington, July 30 : A recent study has revealed that individuals with mild H1N1 infection may go undetected using standard diagnostic criteria.

The study has , therefore, concluded that coughing or other respiratory symptoms are more accurate in determining influenza infection than presence of a fever.

Currently, public health officials rely on body temperature (detecting fever) to screen individuals for potential infection with H1N1.

Bhubaneswar, July 23 : A doctor has tested positive for swine flu in this Orissa capital, a senior state health official said Friday.

"The doctor tested positive Thursday. This is the first confirmed case in the state so far this year," Bikash Patnaik, joint director in the state health directorate told IANS.

"He is receiving treatment at his home and is out of danger," he said refusing to divulge the identity of the doctor.

Kolkata, July 21 : Seven people were admitted to hospital after they tested positive for swine flu, taking the number of confirmed cases in West Bengal to 27 this year, the state health department said Wednesday.

Washington, July 15 : A new research at the University of Liverpool has shown that over half of UK swine flu hospital admissions and inpatient deaths occurred in people with no underlying health problems or obvious risk factors.

Kolkata, July 10 : West Bengal recorded a fresh case of swine flu Saturday as a five-year-old child tested positive for the contagious disease.

"He is from Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district. He has been admitted to Beliaghata Infectious Disease Hospital," said Asit Biswas, the state's nodal officer for swine fu.

On Friday, two children, aged between five and seven, tested positive for swine flu.(IANS)

New Delhi, July 5 : The swine flu situation continues to be serious in the four southern states and Maharashtra, which have reported 366 of the 370 H1N1 infections in the last one week, official figures show.

Kerala remains the worst affected state with 222 confirmed reports of swine flu. A rise in number of swine flu cases has been reported from all severely affected states with Maharashtra reporting 72 cases, Karnataka 31, Tamil Nadu 22, and Andhra Pradesh 19.

Hyderabad, June 22 : A pregnant woman succumbed to the H1N1 virus here Tuesday, taking the toll to two since last week in Andhra Pradesh, officials said.

The relatives of the 28-year-old woman, who hailed from Medak district, alleged that she was not given proper treatment at the Gandhi Hospital, where she had been admitted a few days back.

This is the second death due to swine flu since the first case was reported last week.

New Delhi, June 22 : With the onset of Monsoon, the deadly swine flu has intensified in the country with over 13 deaths being reported in the last one week, an official said Tuesday.

The total number of cases reported in the last week -- since June 15 -- is 233.

While Kerala remains the worst-hit, the threat is becoming grave in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh as Monsoon has already set over these states.
