Norwegian arrested in Cambodia on underage sex charges
Submitted by Mohit Joshi on Fri, 01/22/2010 - 05:04Phnom Penh, Jan 22 - A 64-year-old Norwegian man was arrested in the Cambodian tourist town of Siem Reap on suspicion of sexually abusing four boys, aged 11 to 14, media reported Friday.
The man was arrested Wednesday after a boy leaving the man's guest house told police he was paid $40 for sex, Sun Bunthorng, the provincial head of the anti-trafficking department, told the Cambodia Daily newspaper.
Sun said the case would likely go to court Friday in the tourist town, outside of which lies the famous Angkor Wat temple complex.

Phnom Penh - Cambodia faces a fresh HIV/AIDS epidemic because of a sharp rise in intravenous drug use driven by an influx of cheap methamphetamines, a senior government official said Monday.
Lou Ramin, director general of the National Authority for Combating Drugs, told a conference that statistics showed overall drug use had decreased but intravenous use was growing and spreading.
Cambodia bans Chinese powdered baby milk

Secretary of State for the Commerce Ministry Chan Nora said Cambodia's quality control bureau also ramped up testing of imported products.
"We need to protect the public. This applies to all products - not just Chinese goods. We have stepped up inspections," he said.
China is a major donor and close ally of Cambodia, and Nora stressed the crackdown was not aimed at any one country.
Cambodian dengue cases down, but tourist hubs still at risk

Dengue Control Centre director Duong Socheat warned that the nation's main tourist hubs of Siem Reap and Phnom Penh remained amongst the highest risk areas as the country entered the peak of its monsoon season.

Military police officer Ra Dy, who lives on the outskirts of the capital, said he personally had lost three dogs in quick succession and had decided to stop keeping any more until things settled down.
"If you check on them every hour, they might still be there, but if you forget and leave them for two hours, they are gone," he said.

Impoverished former Khmer Rouge fighters in north-western Cambodia have reported a spike in malaria infections, raising fears of a new epidemic along the Thai border, police said Tuesday.
A senior police officer in Samlot who declined to be named said by telephone that the Thai border area had recorded 92 new cases of the mosquito-borne disease last month and 93 this month.
