Yellow fever epidemic kills 45 in Uganda

Kampala, Dec 24 : At least 45 people have died from yellow fever in northern Uganda since early November, the Health Ministry said in a statement Friday.
A total of 174 people have been infected in nine districts across the north of the East African nation.
The viral disease is transmitted by mosquitoes and the victims suffer from high fever, loss of appetite, vomiting and in some cases bleeding from the mouth, nose and stomach.(DPA)

Kampala - The Ugandan government plans to set out measures combatting prostitution, including publishing names of offenders in newspapers, on the internet and on television, Ethics and Integrity Minister James Nsaba Buturo confirmed Thursday.
Officials: 1.6 million Ugandans dead from AIDS since 1982

Kampala - AIDS has killed 1.6 million people in Uganda since it was first diagnosed in the country in 1982, health officials said Tuesday.
"The deaths have been accumulating since 1982 and maybe the figure could reach three million in the future," Dr Alex Opio, assistant commissioner for national diseases control in the health ministry, told reporters.
Uganda to double number of AIDS patients on drugs to 300,000

Kampala - Uganda on Thursday said it had begun a programme to more than double the number of people receiving AIDS drugs to 300,000.
The total number of patients currently receiving antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) stands at 125,000, including 13,000 children below the age of 12.
