Breast cancer survivor's book a moving taleShimla, Oct 24 - A breast cancer survivor has penned a book narrating her innate struggle and eventual triumph.

The book, "Sunshine: My Encounter with Cancer", by Shimla-based writer Minakshi Chaudhry was released by Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal here Monday.

This is the author's 10th book.

Lack of syringes hits Himachal's HIV testsShimla, Oct 13 - After condoms, it is now disposable syringes that are in short supply in Himachal Pradesh, severely hitting the state's AIDS control programme.

For over three months, the Himachal AIDS Control Society has been facing a huge shortage of syringes meant for free collection of blood samples for HIV tests. For the time being, the society has been forced to borrow syringes from state-run hospitals.

21 die of mite disease in HimachalShimla, Oct 8 - At least 21 people have died of scrub typhus, a disease caused by the bite of an infected mite, in Himachal Pradesh this year, an official said here Saturday.

"Over 450 people were tested positive for the disease," a spokesperson for state health services told IANS.

He said most of the cases were reported from the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital in Shimla and Rajendra Prasad Medical College in Tanda, Kangra district.

Swine Flu Shimla, Aug 27 : A man has tested positive for swine flu in Himachal Pradesh, taking the number of H1N1 cases in the state to 10 this year, an official said Friday.

"A middle-aged man from Mandi district tested positive for swine flu and was admitted to Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMCH) on Thursday," Vinod Mehta, swine flu nodal officer, told IANS.

He said the patient, a truck driver by profession, had recently returned from Delhi.

Captive breeding of rare pheasant hit by bacterial infection

bacterial infectionShimla, June 15 : A highly-endangered pheasant species, the brilliantly plumaged western tragopan that is being bred in captivity in a Himachal Pradesh pheasantry, has been hit by a bacterial infection which has put the brakes on breeding efforts this year.

The western tragopan is being bred at the Saharan pheasantry, located 160 km from Shimla, the only such in the world.

One more swine flu death in Himachal; toll rises to 15

Shimla, Dec 29 - A 31-year-old man died due to swine flu in Shimla, taking the toll in the state to 15, a health official said Tuesday.

"The victim was a resident of Jubbal Kotkhai (in Shimla district). He died at the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital here Monday. He was admitted to the hospital in the morning," swine flu nodal officer Vinod Mehta told IANS.

He said that so far 15 people have died due to the H1N1 virus in the state.

"Till now 41 people have tested positive for the disease," he added. (IANS)

Two women test positive for H1N1 in Himachal

Shimla, Dec 19 - Two women tested positive for swine flu in Himachal Pradesh, taking the total number of cases to 21 in the state, a health official said Saturday.

The two women, hailing from Nahan town in Sirmaur district, tested positive Friday at the Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla.

Eight people have died of the H1N1 virus in the state so far. (IANS)
