Hong Kong - The industrial chemical that has contaminated Chinese milk supplies has been found in Heinz baby food in Hong Kong, officials said Saturday.
Melamine was found in samples of Heinz DHA plus AA Vegetable Formula Cereal in tests by the Hong Kong Centre for Food Safety on food imported from China.
The amount detected in the sample was 1.6 milligrams per kilogram, the centre said, compared to a newly introduced legal limit of 1 milligram per kilogram.
"We have informed the trade of the test results and asked them to stop selling the product concerned," a spokesman for the centre said.
"We have also sent warning letters to the retailers and importers concerned, and the importers will recall the affected products."
The spokesman said that levels in the baby formula were low and a 7-month-old child weighing 6.4 kilograms would have to eat seven packets of the Heinz product a day to reach dangerous levels. Tests would be carried out on another 40 samples of baby food made in mainland China over the weekend to see if any other products were contaminated, he said.
Earlier this week, Nestle brand milk made in mainland China was found to contain melamine in tests in Hong Kong.
Five Hong Kong children have so far been found to have kidney stones from drinking contaminated milk products from mainland China. Four children in China have died. (dpa)
