Autism bill could secure majority in the Senate

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 out of every 150 children is now diagnosed with Autism, a developmental disorder often impairing socialization.

Recent bill requiring insurers to cover autistic children couldn't get majority in the Senate. This has highly displeased parents supporting the bill.

Ralph Toddre, founder of the Autism Coalition of Nevada, who also sits on the Nevada Commission on Autism Spectrum Disorders, said that the cost of effective treatment can reach $24,000 to $40,000 per year per child, with additional costs resulting from the various medical conditions that usually accompany autism.

Insurance companies claim that the care needed in autism involves intensive speech and occupational therapy is not strictly medical even though it arises from a medical condition. Hence they refuse to pay for it.

The whole nation was waiting for the fate of the bill especially Loudoun County and other fast-growing areas of Northern Virginia with high numbers of children. Enraged parents believe that injustice has been done.
