According to the official figures, it has been reported that rural women are more addicted to tobacco in India then urban centers. 'World no tobacco day' is celebrated on Monday which particularly focus on the women's consumption of tobacco. Health Ministry has issued a statement revealing that 0.5 percent of women in urban areas smoke whereas this figure in rural areas is 2 percent. India remains low in the tobacco consumption in any form by women when compared with other countries keeping the total percentage as high as 10 .
The overall figures of women using smokeless tobacco in urban areas are 6 percent and 12 percent in rural areas. It has been found that 33 percent of Indian men and eight percent of women chew tobacco. A statement revealed by WHO says that, around the globe 80 percent of men are tobacco users but this year focus is on the women who are on the target of tobacco industries because it is found that tobacco consumption is increasing among women in some countries and regions.
Ten Percent of the world's smokers are found in India and every year this country faces the deaths of about one million people due to tobacco use. Major heart attacks among youth in India are due to smoking, said by Cardiologist Balbir Singh. Dr. Singh said that although youth considered it as a stress buster for a moment or a fashion statement but in long term it proves to be the cause of stress. The tar released by the smoke blocked the arteries and increase the blood pressure which finally leads to heart failures. In 2010, 'World no tobacco day' is also focusing on women working in tobacco industry.
