Hopes of better economic prospects sends Nikkei above 10,000Tokyo  - Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average on Monday rose above 10,000 and closed at its highest level since October after market sentiment was cheered by improved US corporate earnings results.

The Nikkei ended at 10,088.66, up 144.11 points, or 1.45 per cent, and the broader-based Topix index was also up 7.78 points, or 0.85 per cent, at 928.26.

Securities, precision machinery and electrical machinery issues were among the biggest sellers after upbeat US corporate earnings results came in better than expected.

The euro traded at 1.4215-20 dollars, up from late Friday's quote of 1.4212-15 dollars, and at 134.70-75 yen, down from 134.79-83 yen. (dpa)
