India, Chile leaders agree to strengthen ties New Delhi - Chile on Tuesday underscored its solidarity with India as the two countries signed four pacts to strengthen relations including an agreement on peaceful uses of outer space.

"Chile strongly condemned the terrorist attacks on Mumbai on 26 November 2008. Chile voiced the hope that the intellectual and actual perpetrators would be identified soon and brought to justice," a joint statement from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Chilean President Michelle Bachelet said.

More than 170 people were killed in the attacks blamed on Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba group.

Both Singh and Bachelet called for enhanced exchange of information to combat terrorism and urged "early conclusion" of the United Nation's Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism.

An agreement to cooperate in energy was signed between Chile's National Energy Commission and India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

A pact on education and an agreement on joint exploration in uses of outer space for peaceful purposes were also signed, as well as one on cooperation in geology and mineral resources.

The two leaders stressed on the importance of enhancing trade and economic relations and decided to double bilateral trade in the next five years from the current level of about 2.3 billion dollars.

Bachelet, the first female president of Chile, planned to visit India's financial capital Mumbai and southern metropolis of Chennai during the five-day visit that began Monday. (dpa)
