India importing bricks from BangladeshAgartala, Aug 22 : The northeastern states are importing bricks from neighboring Bangladesh to meet growing demand in the infrastructure development sector.

According to sources the first lot of brick laden 20 trucks entered Agartala through the Akhaura check post at Indo-Bangladesh border on Thursday.

The infrastructure development sector feels that the bricks from Bangladesh are of good quality.

"The bricks that we are importing are of good quality. I am importing bricks worth rupees 40 crores. Since I have started importing bricks, four truckloads of bricks have reached Agartala," said Tapan Das, an importer of bricks.

Bangladesh is actively exporting stone chips, cement, plastic goods, agro products, readymade garments and frozen foods to the Northeastern states.

The bilateral trade between India and Bangladesh grew from $2.56 billion in 2006-07 to 3.616 billion dollars in 2007-08, says a report of the India-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IBCCI).

Bangladesh is keen to boost trade and commerce with northeastern India to narrow down its trade deficit with the country. (ANI)
