Indian fighter jet crashes, 7 injured

Mig 27 Fighter JetNew Delhi - An Indian Air Force (IAF) MiG-27 fighter jet crashed in a village in the north-western state of Rajasthan on Friday, injuring six adults and a child, news reports and officials said.

The pilot ejected out of the cockpit just before the aircraft, which was on a training sortie, crashed near the central Jodhpur city, IAF spokesman NN Joshi told the PTI news agency.

The IAF headquarters in national capital New Delhi also confirmed the accident but said details were awaited.

The plane crashed soon after taking off into a house in a hamlet in the Luni area. "The IAF has ordered a probe into the crash," Joshi said.

The report cited local police saying seven people including a two-year old child were injured in the accident.

It was the second aircraft IAF has lost in as many weeks, with the previous accident being that of a Russian-made Su-30MKI air superiority fighter near Jaisalmer on April
30.

This is the fourth IAF aircraft crash in 2009 - with an aircraft from IAF's aerobatics team and a unmanned aerial vehicle crashing on the same day on January 21.

The last crash from the aging fleet of the Russian-made MiGs, that constitute over 65 per cent of India's air force took place in September last year.

Of the 794 MiG-series aircraft used by the IAF since 1963, more than 330 have been lost in accidents, according to the Defence Ministry.(dpa)
