Indian markets rise more than 2 per cent

Indian markets rise more than 2 per centNew Delhi  - Indian markets rose by more than 2 cent Friday on increased buying by funds and investors after figures of India's economic growth were released.

The Bombay Stock Exchange's 30-share sensitive index which opened at 14,319.87, rose 329.24 points up 2.30 per cent to close the day's trade at 14,625.25.

Similarly, the broader 50-share Nifty index of the National Stock Exchange rose by 111.85 points or 2.58 per cent to end trading at 4,448.95.

BSE Sensex and Nifty extended gains to the third straight trading session on Friday, led by the oil and gas and steel stocks.

The markets started their upward movement after GDP data was released by the country's statistics department on Friday noon.

The Indian economy grew at 6.7 per cent for the 2008-09 fiscal year, considered better than expected particularly at a time when the global economy is estimated to grow at only 2.6 per cent.(dpa)
