Indonesian police in shoot-out with alleged terrorists

Indonesian police in shoot-out with alleged terrorists Jakarta - Indonesian police have been involved in shooting with suspected Islamic militants in Central Java province on Friday, a police spokesman said.

National Police spokesman Nanan Soekarna said he could not elaborate, but police have involved in shoot-out in Temanggung district, Central Java.

He said police have been hunting for suspected militants involved in deadly suicide attacks last month on two luxury hotels in Jakarta.

The July 17 attacks on the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton killed nine and wounded 53, including Indonesians and foreigners.

Police have yet to identify the perpetrators but suspect that Malaysian-born militant and bomb-maker Noordin Mohammad Top, who heads a splinter group of radical Islamic group Jemaah Islamiah, may have helped plan the attacks.

Soekarna also declined to confirm on reports that Noordin had been arrested in the raid, but said police are still rounding up a house in Kedu village of Temanggung, believed to be where the most-wanted terrorist has been hiding there.

"We're suspected that Noordin was hiding inside that house," detik. com online quoted Soekarna as saying.

Noordin, the notorious Malaysian bomb-maker who leads a breakaway faction of Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), is believed to be the mastermind behind all the bombings in Indonesia since 2000, killing hundreds. (dpa)
