Iranian Foreign Minister arrives in Baghdad on unannounced visit

Manouchehr MottakiBaghdad  - Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki arrived in Baghdad on Saturday for a previously unannounced visit and met with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.

A statement by al-Maliki's office about the talks said Mottaki condemned the recent series of bomb attacks in the Iraqi capital Baghdad that left more than 100 killed and several hundred wounded.

"Iraq's security has a direct impact on all neighboring countries," the statement cited Mottaki as saying.

Mottaki's visit comes as Iraqis pay tribute to late Shiite leader Abdelaziz al-Hakim, who died on Wednesday in hospital in Iran where he had been receiving treatment for lung cancer the past four months.

Last February, Mottaki visited Baghdad and met with Iraqi President Jalal al-Talabani, al-Maliki and top Shiite cleric Ali al- Sistani.(dpa)
