Iranian foreign minister not to attend G8 Afghanistan meeting

Iranian foreign minister not to attend G8 Afghanistan meeting Tehran - Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki will not attend the G8 meeting in Rome this week which is to deal with the situation in Afghanistan, ISNA news agency reported Wednesday.

"I have no plan to go," Mottaki said at the end of a cabinet meeting in Tehran.

Observers believe that Mottaki's decision not to attend the G8 meeting is due to tensions with the West over the current internal crisis in Iran following protests over alleged election fraud.

Tehran has accused several European countries and the United States of "interference in Iran's internal affairs" and is even considering revising its ties with Britain, France and Germany.

Mottaki confirmed that two British diplomats were expelled due to this alleged interference. London in return expelled two Iranian diplomats. (dpa)
