Jackie Chan appointed to China's top political advisory bodyThe communist government in China has appointed Hong Kong action star Jackie Chan to be part of China's top political advisory body, in an attempt to possibility showcase close ties between China and the former British colony.

Many believe that the Chinese government will use the appointment to stress the unity between China and Hong Kong, which joined the communist country in 1997 but enjoys separate status within the country. Experts say that Chan presence at the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) is aimed at promoting ties between the two sides and pointing to the unity.

Some described the move as a campaign to showcase unified China with Hong Kong and Taiwan as fully integral part of the country. Chan's involvement in the communist politics has resulted in his popularity falling in the democratic Hong Kong. His reputation has also taken a beating in recent times because of his pro-Beijing stances like proposing with limits on the right to protest.

Several Hong Kong residents took to the internet to express their frustration over another star joining the communist government and its programmes. The CPPCC advisory body, which has more than 2000 members, includes China's other political parties and a few celebrities.
