Tokyo - Japan's House of Representatives (Diet) on Tuesday voted down a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Taro Aso's administration following his decision to dissolve the lower house on July 21.
Opposition parties led by the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) submitted the no-confidence resolution Monday after the coalition of the Liberal Democratic Party and the New Komeito Party lost a Tokyo assembly election over the weekend. The DPJ gained a majority in the assembly.
The opposition parties also filed a non-binding censure motion against Aso in the upper house, which is controlled by DPJ.
If the House of Councillors approves the motion, the opposition bloc said it planned to boycott the Diet proceedings.
The parliament still has important bills left for deliberation, including one to enable inspections of North Korean cargo in line with a UN Security Council resolution.
The 480-seat lower house election was scheduled for August 30. (dpa)
