The 30-share index BSE Sensex continued to trade in the downbeat manner with the index dropping 57 points at 18,989.

In the meantime, the broad-based Nifty declined 16 points to trade at 5,695.

The broader markets remained in the positive terrain, with the midcap surging 0.6% and smallcap appending 0.8%.

Among the sectoral indices, the Oil & Gas index surged 1% accompanied by Consumer Durables, Automobile and PSU.

IT, Metal, FMCG and Health Care dropped 0.2% - 1%.

Reliance Communications surged around 2%.

Firozabad (Uttar Pradesh), Nov 12 - An upset Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, the son of party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, Thursday said his wife Dimple's defeat in the Lok Sabha by-election here was a verdict against him.

"The verdict is against me. I had won the seat earlier," Akhilesh Yadav said at a press conference with his wife next to him.

Dimple Yadav was defeated by the Congress' Raj Babbar, who had left the Samajwadi Party, by more than 85,000 votes.

Washington, Jan 8 : A research team from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in the US has announced the discovery of cosmic radio noise that booms six times louder than expected.

The finding comes from a balloon-borne instrument named ARCADE, which stands for the Absolute Radiometer for Cosmology, Astrophysics, and Diffuse Emission.

In July 2006, the instrument launched from NASA's Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility in Palestine, Texas, and flew to an altitude of 120,000 feet, where the atmosphere thins into the vacuum of space.

ARCADE's mission was to search the sky for heat from the first generation of stars. Instead, it found a cosmic puzzle.

"Three years ago today [YouTube co-founder] Steve [Chen] and I stood in front of our offices and jokingly crowned ourselves the 'burger kings' of media," read the post, which was titled Y, 000,000,000uTube.

Washington, Oct 7 : A scientist is creating a modular, multi-functional drug delivery system that promises simultaneously to enhance the effectiveness and reduce undesirable side-effects of a number of different drugs.

Eva Harth, who is an assistant professor of chemistry at Vanderbilt University, has created a “nanosponge” specially designed to carry large numbers of drug molecules. She has also discovered a “molecular transporter” that, when attached to the nanosponge, carries it and its cargo across biological barriers into specific intracellular compartments, which are very difficult places for most drugs to reach. She has shown that her system can reach another difficult target: the brain.

Lahore, June 14 : The US Government mouthpiece Voice of America has come under the scanner for allegedly providing a platform for Taliban propaganda, as its Pashto language service is being asked to explain VOA's interview with Baitullah Mehsud in Pakistan.

According to papers obtained by the Washington Times, US State Department's Acting Inspector General, Harold Geisel, said his office would conduct a review "to determine the effectiveness of their broadcast and editorial practices and policies".
