Law Ministry asks Rajasthan Government to decide on Gujjar issue

Gujjar protestors New Delhi, June 2 : The Union Law Ministry in response to the recommendation letter sent by Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje has said that giving reservation to any community is a decision to be taken by the State.

It also said that despite the existence of a provision in the Constitution to provide reservation to a particular group, the responsibility for it lies with the State.

To give quota benefits to a community, the State has to approach the Centre with appropriate data, it added.

Raje had in her letter recommended a four to six per cent quota for Gujjars in the category of denotified class of tribals/nomadic tribes.

At least 43 persons have died in Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and the National Capital Region in the past one week over the issue. (ANI)
