Gorakhpur, Feb 11 - Saffron-clad Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Lok Sabha member Yogi Adityanath Saturday not only predicted a fractured verdict in the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections but also ruled out the possibility of formation of any government in the state.
"Let me tell you that no political party will be in a position to form a government," the politician told reporters in this eastern Uttar Pradesh city.
Asked if he was foreseeing a spell of president's rule in the state, he shot back: "You know what happens when no political party is in a position to form a government in a state."
However, his contention was refuted by BJP national spokesman Balbir Punj. On this, Adityanath, who heads a powerful Hindu monastery here, criticised Punj's perception.
"I am aware of the ground reality, people sitting in Delhi are oblivious of what is happening on ground," he said.
Asked to comment on the possibility of a coalition between the BJP and Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party, Adityanath remarked: "If BJP decided to give support to Mayawati, it will raise a big question mark on the future of BJP in the state."
A similar sentiment was also expressed recently by BJP leader Uma Bharti who was being projected as the party's potential chief ministerial candidate in Uttar Pradesh.
Uma Bharti, who is heading the party's election campaign in Uttar Pradesh, was earlier the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh.
Asked for his views on Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's absence from the BJP campaign in the state, Adityanath said Modi had not been able to come because of "his preoccupations in his home state".
Referring to union Law Minister Salman Khurshid's remark that Congress president Sonia Gandhi shed tears on seeing pictures of the Batla House gunfight in New Delhi, Adityanath said the minister should be sacked. (IANS)
