‘Balasaheb’s demise marks end of an era’: Modi
Ahemdabad, Nov 17 : Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said Shiv Sena patriarch Balasaheb Thackeray’s demise marks the end of an era. “He was fighting like a warrior. But now, we are all saddened. We have lost him today. His death marks the end of an era,” said Modi in his condolence message.
“He was very kind and affectionate to me. I personally have lost a guide, a mentor. I pay homage to him and pray God to give courage to their family to bear the grief,” he added. Remembering Thackeray as a good cartoonist and a free minded journalist, Modi said: “He always kept himself away from power and like an organizer he build up a movement, a political party.”
Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee expressed her condolences to Balasaheb’s family, and said that she was shocked to hear of the Shiv Sena chief’s demise. Bal Thackeray, who was critically ill for the past few days, passed away at his residence ''''Matoshree'''' in suburban Bandra earlier today.
He was 86. "He had suffered a cardiac arrest. We could not revive him despite our best efforts. He breathed his last at around 3:30 PM," Dr Jalil Parkar, who treated the Sena supremo, told reporters after emerging from Thackeray residence Saturday evening. Thackeray had been suffering from respiratory problems and pancreatic disease.
He is survived by sons Jaidev and Uddhav, who is the Executive President of the party. His body will be kept at the Shiv Sena Bhavan for ‘darshan’ from 7 a. m. onwards tomorrow. The last rites of the Shiv Sena chief will be performed at around 5 p. m. (ANI)
