Bangladeshi opposition leaders held in police raid

Bangladeshi opposition leaders held in police raidDhaka, March 12 - Scores of Bangladesh opposition members were detained from the party headquarters in Dhaka during a night raid Monday, Xinhua reported.

The police raid was carried out about an hour after former prime minister Khaldea Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) announced countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal for Tuesday.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, acting BNP secretary general who was also detained, made the announcement of hartal after a rally of the main opposition alliance was foiled, following a number of handmade bomb explosions.

Apart from the leaders, the law enforcers reportedly also picked up more than 50 activists and office staff of the BNP headquarters during the raid.

BNP-led 18-party alliance, in which Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami party is a key ally, organised the rally Monday afternoon to protest at what it said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina government's corruption, misrule, oppression and "mass killings".

At least 76 people including several law enforcers and dozens of Jamaat men were killed and hundreds of others injured in the recent riot after a tribunal Feb 28 delivered death sentence to the Jamaat's Vice President Delwar Hosssain Sayeede for war crimes in 1971.

To thwart any untoward incident following the raid on the BNP headquarters, where police claimed that they found a dozen live bombs, paramilitary troops have been deployed in this captial city. (IANS)
