Myanmar releases 651 political prisoners as part of national reconciliation move

Myanmar releases 651 political prisoners as part of national reconciliation moveYangon, Jan 13 : Myanmar has freed several prominent political prisoners, signalling a step towards national reconciliation, which is a major condition imposed by Western nations for easing sanctions on the country.

The move was a part of a presidential pardon for 651 detainees, who, according to state radio and television, would contribute towards "nation-building".

It was accompanied by the signing of a cease-fire agreement with ethnic Karen rebels to halt the decade-long violence, The Daily Express reports.

Both moves are latest among the series of reforms undertaken by the new, nominally civilian government to end international isolation when it assumed power from the military junta last year.

The number of political prisoners who still remain behind bars will, however, take time to get released taking into account that several detainees lists are maintained in the country.

A 1988 pro-democracy uprising leader, Min Ko Naing and Shan Nationalities League for Democracy Chairman Khun Tun Oo are among those released.

Oo was charged with high treason after being accused by government of launching movements to deal a severe blow to national unity. (ANI)
